Sorry for the ambiguity. I did edit the text above slightly to clarify my point, which was that very few people are neutral in their reviews. We all are vulnerable to being influenced by favors that reviewers have done for us. If I were a judge, I would recuse myself from a lawsuit involving Dave, on the grounds that we had a past (shallow) relationship. In this case, I am emphasizing how everyone (including me) is influenced by past relationships.

We're of course very grateful for the positive reviews that we have received.

I respectfully disagree with the comments in your disclosure.
You indicate that the people who have reviewed the book are
looking for something in return. I doubt it. If your book was a
dog, you'd just not get any reviews from people -- or they
would be fluffy, no substance reviews. By saying what you did
above, you have inadvertently "whacked" those who thought
enough of your book to spend their time sharing their thoughts.

Then you turn around and review Dave's book -- which I've
read and reviewed also. Are you in essence saying that we
shouldn't believe your review because you had an ulterior
motive? Or are you saying we should believe your review is "from
the heart," yet your comment about your reviewers implies theirs
aren't.

A little conflicting, don't you think?
